7. Research Favourite Film Title Sequences

The type of title sequence a film uses and the titles involved are largely influenced by the type of movie, as well as the budget for the film. Independent films with smaller budgets tend to have shorter title sequences, simply because there are less people involved in the production of the film.
The film's title sequence tells a narrative and gives insight into the main characters and their circumstances. We are introduced to a victim, the bully, a mother and a friend all early on. This hints at the plot but doesn't give the whole story away which makes the audience want to watch the whole film.

The budget for 'Beautiful Thing'
  •       Budget: unknown ( we can assume more than £500,000)
  •       Opening weekend: $33,931 (US, October 11th 1996)
  •      Box office: £3million

From the list of credits from the title sequences of these movies, it is clear that the bigger budget High School films have a bigger production team than the smaller budget Youth Dramas. This may be because youth dramas tend to be made independently due to them appealing to a certain group of people in society. On the other hand, High School teen dramas are watched on a larger scale and therefore large film productions don't view them as risky to make as they will definitely make a profit.

9. Research Extension Activity - Who Makes Title Sequences?

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and Academy Award-winning film-maker, but he is best known for his design on animated motion picture title sequences.

Saul Bass was the master of the title sequence, working on such films as Anatomy of a Murder, North by Northwest and Goodfellas.
Saul Bass trained as a graphic designer, and was commissioned by director Otto Preminger to put together a poster for his 1954 opera/musical. Preminger was so impressed he asked him to create a title sequence too, and Bass went on to specialise in the area.

Some examples of his work:

“I had the opportunity the other day to screen a reel of Richard’s work, and I was amazed at the uniformly high quality of his work. The fact is, he’s the only guy around whose work I wish I had done.”
—Saul Bass, Los Angeles, October, 1994

Richard Greenberg is a motion graphics and main titles designer from Chicago.

He has a BA in industrial design and an MFA in graphic design. After teaching at both the University of Illinois and the Institute of Design in Chicago, he created a short film entitled Stop, filmed at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention. After Stop won first prize at the New York Film Festival Student Competition, Richard got a job working under Pablo Ferro in New York.

In 1977, he started R/Greenberg Associates with his brother Robert. During his R/GA period, he was responsible for the main titles for Superman, Alien, The World According to Garp, Altered States, Dirty Dancing, Death Becomes Her, and The Untouchables, as well as visual effects work on Predator and The Devil’s Advocate. His work with Stan Winston for Predator earned them an Academy Award nomination for visual effects in 1987. In 1989, he directed a feature film called Little Monsters.

In 1991, Richard moved to Hollywood and formed Greenberg/Schluter with Bruce Schluter and together they designed the main titles for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Independence Day, the Lethal Weapon series, and The Matrix. Many of his works are documented in the permanent collections of museums including The Art Institute of Chicago, MOMA, and The Louvre

8. Research What is Genre & What is a Teen Drama Film?

Genre: A class or category; something that has a particular form, content or technique.

Most popular movie genres:

What is a teen film?

It is a film genre that is targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of teenagers, such as coming of age*, first love, rebellion, conflict with parents or teen alienation. Often these normally serious subject matters are presented in a glossy, stereotyped or trivialised way. Many teenage characters are portrayed by young adults. Some teen films appeal to young males while others appeal to young females.
Films in this genre are often set in high schools, or contain characters that are of high school age. Sexual themes and crude humour are also common.
*A young persons transition from childhood to adulthood.
A hybrid of a teen film is a teen drama film:
A type of drama series with a focus on teenage characters. It was non existent till the early 1990's when this type of genre became more popular. Directors and producers witnessed the success of this genre and saw it as an opportunity to reach out to a previously ignored demographic. Teen dramas often have soap opera elements, incorporating more than one story into several episodes.
Some of the earliest teen-operated TV shows did not call themselves teen dramas, soap operas such as "Never Too Young" which aired from 1965 to 1966.
Some of the most well known TV dramas include "90210" and "Degrassi".

American channel, MTV, is well known for showcasing teen dramas. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos. In its early years, MTV's main target demographic were young adults, but today, MTV's programming is primarily targeted at adolescents and teenagers.
