What is a teen film?



 It is a film genre that is targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of teenagers, such as coming of age*, first love, rebellion, conflict with parents or teen alienation. Often these normally serious subject matters are presented in a glossy, stereotyped or trivialised way. Many teenage characters are portrayed by young adults. Some teen films appeal to young males while others appeal to young females.
Films in this genre are often set in high schools, or contain characters that are of high school age. Sexual themes and crude humour are also common.
*A young persons transition from childhood to adulthood.
A hybrid of a teen film is a teen drama film:
A type of drama series with a focus on teenage characters. It was non existent till the early 1990's when this type of genre became more popular. Directors and producers witnessed the success of this genre and saw it as an opportunity to reach out to a previously ignored demographic. Teen dramas often have soap opera elements, incorporating more than one story into several episodes. 
Some of the earliest teen-operated TV shows did not call themselves teen dramas, soap operas such as "Never Too Young" which aired from 1965 to 1966.
Some of the most well known TV dramas include "90210" and "Degrassi".



American channel, MTV, is well known for showcasing teen dramas. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos. In its early years, MTV's main target demographic were young adults, but today, MTV's programming is primarily targeted at adolescents and teenagers.
